How earth friendly is your garden?  The things you do in your garden have wide-ranging impacts.  Come and learn about gardening practices that you can adopt to make your garden more earth friendly.
 
Niki is a certified master gardener and member of the Master Gardner Association of San Diego County.
She holds a B.S. in Soil Science from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and a M.S. in Tropical Agriculture from University of Hawaii – Manoa.  After working as a Soil Scientist in Hawaii and California, she decided to stay home and raise her family. Currently she resides in Ranch Penasquitos, with her husband, children and her dog, Crosby.
Her gardening interests include soil health, landscape design and earth friendly gardens.
If you make at least one significant change such as proper irrigation or mulching it can have positive effects on you, your garden and the wildlife around you.

We are so lucky to welcome Debby Halliday, the current President of the San DIego County Orchid Society.
 
 

excellent habitat for a wide variety of orchids.  There are many you can grow on a patio or balcony with just a little shade to protect them from the full sun.  I will present a lecture with slides about orchid growing in general, with an emphasis on the orchids you can grow well either in your house or outdoors.  I will also bring an assortment of good outdoor orchids to show you.  There will be a handout list of the orchids we discuss and plenty of time for questions.”   Debby Halliday

 Our speaker is Eileene Bogard, a certified florist from Mission Hills Florist.
 She studied Floral Design at Cuyamaca College and has participated in the San Diego Museum of Art “Art Alive” for 7 years. She has also volunteered with Rene Van Rems at the San Diego Botanical Gardens for their yearly Gala.  
 
She is well qualified to
show us how to enhance the flowers we purchase at our local stores.  She’ll provide 5 Floral Arrangements, discuss container choices and the good news is: they will be
raffled off at the end of her presentation!

Green Meadow Growers is a wholesale grower who has produced ornamental grasses, perennials, and succulents since 2001.  The owner Mike will be our speaker in February.  He’ll talk about sedges, sedums and grasses – this is about texture and movement.

We are honored to welcome Nancy Carol Carter, a horticultural historian and frequent community speaker.  She is associate editor of California Garden magazine, and serves on the boards of San Diego Floral Association and California Garden and Landscape History Society and volunteers with several Balboa Park and community groups.  Stay after her lecture and enjoy our social tea time with treats!

Also! Don’t forget!  our 8th Annual Food Drive for the Salvation Army Food Pantry

Please bring nutritious, nonperishable food to our next meeting. Canned meats, peanut butter (no glass!) canned soup and vegetables, dried beans and rice are all needed.  Thank You!

Camellias!  Winter Blooming Wonders! March 20, 2018 – 1:00 pm – we’ll hear from an expert, learn all about the beautiful camellia and order our favorites from the World Famous Nuccio’s Nursery.

Dean Turney,  past President of the San Diego Camellia Society knows everything there is to know about these beautiful and easy to grow winners,  he’ll show us beautiful specimens – order your favorites!

For many years our club has gone to Weidners to pot up our plants for the Gardeners Market  but this time Evelyn is coming to us!  She is a La Jolla Garden Club Favorite!  Don’t miss her!

Roy Wilburn, Master Gardener and Director of Horticulture at Sunshine Care Facility in Poway.  Roy tends 5 organic gardens producing both fruit and vegetables for the residents and those in need in the Poway area.  He’s also responsible for maintaining the beautiful greenhouse, fruit tree orchards, Memorial Rose Garden and landscaping of the 32-acre facility.

Roy’s talk will be about preparing your Spring Vegetable Garden!

Tiger Palafox from Mission Hills Nursery

Tiger Palafox is a manager at Mission Hills Nursery. San Diego’s most experienced nursery founded in 1910 by Kate Sessions. Along with working at the nursery Tiger manages the nurseries design, build, maintain portion of the nursery. Being on the front lines in the industry allows him to keep up with hot topics. The biggest topic now is food in the landscape. People want more than beauty out of the garden. Citrus trees, Passion vines, Guava bushes are all great ways to create a edible landscape. Tiger will teach you what plants to use and which to look out for. Also pest problems and solutions to keep your garden the green side up.

We’ll welcome Patsy Eppler, the popular Floral Designer from Green Gardens Nursery.  Patsy has been a floral designer for over 40 years and is no stranger to the La Jolla Garden Club. In past years she has given many helpful demonstrations on how to prepare and present beautiful arrangements.  She incorporates flowers, succulents, herbs and vegetables into her creative arrangements.  Patsy will show us how driftwood, moss and other accessories can make your arrangements the perfect thing for Mother’s Day!

Next, we’ll have our business meeting followed by a Social Hour with treats provided by our members.

Care of your new Protea

March 15th, 2016  • 1:00pm • La Jolla Woman’s Club Have you even wondered if you could grow the beautiful and exotic protea? Now is your chance to find out. The La Jolla Garden Club March program is on the Strange and Beautiful Protea. Mel Resendiz, from Resendiz Brothers Protea Growers will be our speaker. Resendiz Brothers Protea Growers was established in 1999 and is now one of California’s largest supplier of South African and Australian floral products and plants. They grow over 200 varieties at their nursery in Fallbrook, California.

Mel Resendize will talk about the history of the protea, the different varieties, how to grow and care for protea. He will also bring bouquets and various protea plants to sell. Check our their informational website www.resendizbrothers.com.

We’ll welcome our guest speaker, Michele Spence.   She lives in Villanova, Pennsylvania, where she enjoys giving workshops and programs in Floral Design. Her passion is encouraging garden club members to understand the mechanics of floral design so they may enjoy it as much as she does.  She is also an avid gardener, and loves spending several months a year in La Jolla.

She has twice executed floral designs for The Longwood Garden Special Events,  and she frequently interprets artifacts at the academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia.  Next month she will be decorating “Rooms in Bloom” for Fairmount Park Houses. She exhibits at judged shows such as the Chelsea Flower Show in the UK and the Philadelphia Flower Show.  Lucky for us she will make 4 Floral arrangements and we’ll get to raffle them off!

Fruit, Vegetable & Floral Arrangements

1:00 pm Tuesday November 17th, 2015 • LJ Lutheran Church

Adelaides Co-owner and Creative Director Larry Anhorn will not only create seasonal arrangements but we will be raffling them off after his demonstration.

Larry is from the Pacific Northwest and grew up in a family of farmers and gardeners.  He has been in the floral industry even as a youngster competing in the local garden club chapter’s competition.  His design vision is one of fun and whimsy that constantly changes while playing with shape, texture, negative space, color and contrasts.  He has been featured in several publications, has spoken to many groups about design, and has worked with many talented floral designers. He has also provided floral services for many of Southern California’s celebrity family’s and businesses.

Re-bloom your Orchids with Proper Re-potting!

Demonstration & Workshop

Come join Chuck McClung, local botanist, gardener, and resident orchid expert at Walter Anderson Nursery, and learn everything you need to know about re-potting and re-blooming orchids.  Chuck will share the five common reasons orchids fail to re-bloom.  Since one of the reasons is improper re-potting Chuck will share his secrets on how to do it right.

After refreshments Chuck will stay on and lead an orchid re-potting workshop. Bring your orchids & questions & Chuck will help you re-pot them!

Workshop Details:  

Cost:  $5. per orchid   (no cymbidiums, please)

This workshop will be limited to orchids in 8″ pots & smaller
